Read John chapter 15
Key
Verse:
“I am the vine, you are the branches.
He who abides in Me and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do
nothing” John 15:5 [NKJV]
“As helpless as a child who clings
Fast to his Father’s arm
And casts his weakness on the strength
That keeps him safe from harm:
So I, my Father, cling to Thee,
And thus I every hour
Would link my earthly feebleness
To Thine almighty power”
Fast to his Father’s arm
And casts his weakness on the strength
That keeps him safe from harm:
So I, my Father, cling to Thee,
And thus I every hour
Would link my earthly feebleness
To Thine almighty power”
We can
do nothing of lasting value without Jesus, but we can link our earthly feebleness
to His almighty power and allow Him to work through us.
As God’s
children we have been called to bear fruit that lasts [verse 16]. The secret of
a fruitful life is total dependence upon Jesus. Just as the branch cannot be
fruitful unless it is properly connected to the vine so we cannot be fruitful
unless we are connected to Jesus. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches.
In this
chapter we see some of the amazing fruit that comes as we live in Christ and allow
Him to work through us - purity [verse 3], love [verse 9], joy [verse 11],
answered prayer [verses 7,16], and God glorified in our lives [verse 8]. Jesus
says that those who live in this way are His friends [verses 14,15]. What a
privilege! There might be opposition and even hardship, but what joy to know
His power and His fruit in our lives.
Questions:
What
does it mean to you personally to “abide in Christ”?
Sometimes
there are things that are a hindrance to us as we walk with Jesus. There may
even be good things that are hindrance to the best things. Are you prepared to
allow those things to be pruned so that you bear more fruit? [see verse 1]
