Read John chapter 5
Key
Verse:
“You can’t work on the Sabbath. It’s
illegal to carry that sleeping mat…My Father never stops working…” John 5:10,16
[New Living Translation]
Jesus healed
a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years. At Jesus’ word he took up his
bed and walked. The problem that caused his sickness may well have been a
sinful habit in his life that opened the door to a spirit of infirmity, because
a little later Jesus said to him, “Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon
you” [John 5:14]
The
religious leaders were not happy that Jesus had done this on the Sabbath Day. In
their religious rules it was illegal for a man to carry his bed and walk on the
Sabbath. Their religious rules were more important to them than the man’s
healing and wellbeing!
Jesus
countered their words with an amazing statement, “My Father never stops
working.” God is always compassionate and concerned to meet people’s needs –
not just six days a week but all the time! Sadly, some religious people try to
limit Him by their rules and regulations. Jesus said that for the sake of their
traditions they made God’s word void and of no effect [Matthew 15:6].
The only
things that limit God are our mindsets, and His character. God cannot lie. He
cannot sin and will not be unjust but every good thing is possible with God!
Questions:
J.B.
Philips wrote a book entitled, “Your God is too Small.” Are there attitudes in
your life that limit God from working powerfully in the lives of others?
What
traditions are good and what traditions might become a hindrance to true
freedom in Christ?
